Do you remember the classic skit from the first year of Saturday Night Live? It featured Chevy Chase, Dan Aykroyd and the late, great Gilda Radner. It was a commercial where the three debated the product “Shimmer” – was it a floor wax or a dessert topping?
Wife Gilda: New Shimmer is a floor wax!
Husband Dan: No, new Shimmer is a dessert topping!
Wife: It's a floor wax!
Husband: It's a dessert topping!
Wife: It's a floor wax, I'm telling you!
Husband: It's a dessert topping, you cow!
Spokesman Chevy Chase: Hey, hey, hey, calm down, you two. New Shimmer is both a floor wax and a dessert topping! Here, I'll spray some on your mop… and some on your butterscotch pudding.
My son and I are having a similar debate over the new Sidi New York riding shoe. I say it’s a great lightweight riding boot, and he says the nice looking black shoes were made for dancing at the clubs. There are certainly disadvantages to sharing a shoe size with one’s son. One thing we can agree on is the New York is a sharp looking boot.
The boots have a black suede finish combined with nylon mesh materials. They should be best in warmer weather because of the ventilation through the mesh. The laces allow you to adjust the fit, but there is also a Velcro strap across the front. The boot reaches just above the ankle and has a great snug feel to it. The sole has a firm compound rubber with some reinforcement inside. These are by no means heavy duty, and for those who prefer a waterproof boot, you’ll need to look elsewhere. However, for spring and summer riding I plan on putting a lot of miles on these puppies (assuming I can find them in my son’s closet).
