Every year the Camp GEARS family welcomes young riders to the BMW MOA International Rally, and with a great building for our classrooms and nearby camping area at Salem, Ore., we’re getting ready to do it again.
Riders age 16–26 are invited to join us July 16–17 for learning and hands-on experiences that can help them become safer and smarter on two wheels. Riders with lots of miles under their belts and beginners are both welcome, and the programming is aimed at providing useful and interesting experiences for all levels. Alumni of Camp GEARS are also invited to join in the fun and camaraderie and share with the newcomers their experiences of previous years. The BMW MOA Foundation provides funding and support for Camp GEARS. Participants will have an opportunity, at the Foundation’s expense, to take some of the Rider Performance University (RPU) courses offered at the Rally.
Camp GEARS has grown over the past few years from a handful of young people to more than 25 young participants. Because of this growth and the varying levels of experience in the group, we are seeking those of you out there with expertise to share. The MOA has a wealth of members who have gained a treasure trove of experience from which our young riders at Camp GEARS can benefit. We are hoping some of you can step forward and offer an hour or two of your time during the two days before the Rally (July 16–17) to share that knowledge. We’d also like some adults, including parents of campers, to volunteer some of their time to help during those two days with various activities and routine tasks.
Those participating in Camp GEARS will be able to set up camp the evening of July 15 (but no earlier, because the Madison County Fair ends the day before and they’ll be clearing out). Camp GEARS will kick off on the morning of Tuesday, July 16.
