Having enjoyed Jack Riepe’s moto journal writings both in the BMW Owners News and his blog column for several years now, I was elated to discover he was writing a novel entitled Conversations with a Motorcycle. I, for one, was not disappointed! I hate to use clichés, but I could not put it down. Jack’s re-accounting of his youth and his life with his first motorcycle struck a chord in me that hasn’t been played for many years. His trials and tribulations echoed many of my youthful dalliances and misadventures. Though somewhat ribald and raunchy, the writer also revealed a soft and tender side of a young man growing up on the tough New Jersey streets. He tells his tale with such a free flowing pen that it makes you feel as if you were right there next to him, laughing with his pals or angling for the same girl’s attention.
The book tells of a young Jack, of how he bought his first motorcycle and of the escapades they had over the course of that summer. He introduces you to many of his colorful, real life friends and details the escapades of a wanton youth where practical jokes, quick wit and “baby seal eyes” will eventually get him what he wants and where he needs to be. This particular first bike of Mr. Riepe speaks to him, both cajoling him to make the right choices in life as well as insulting and ridiculing him, I assume, as a twisted method of motivation.
I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who has had the spirit and/or the desire to live life by their own rules and foray down the road less traveled. It will remind you of your long forgotten youth and renew the spark in each and every one of us to welcome every next adventure. Now, how about a book extolling your adventures with Blue Balls*?
