Shannon threads the narrow, scree-crusted Oregon Trail like a buffalo charging through a forest. His agility on the big Beemer pushes the limit of my own control as I try to stay on his quarter, ahead of the dust but far enough back to give him room to maneuver. Horsing a BMW R1200GS Adventure through gravel at high speeds does have its challenges. We are standing on the footpegs for visibility ahead, but also to help steer. It is standard practice to weight the inside peg to initiate a turn, then press on the outside peg to stabilize the bike against sliding out too far. A similar method is used on side-hills. Outside pressure keeps the tire locked into the hill. Although it may look like adventure riders are just standing flat-footed and trying their best to look cool, there really is a point to their posture.
Off-road GS riders spend hours on their feet. Unmodified, standard GS bikes have small perches that are slippery when wet or, once the rubber insert is removed, dig in and create hot spots on the rider’s feet. Stock GS Adventure pegs sport a wider profile, but the stubby, low aspect ratio doesn’t provide the leverage of Black Dog’s newest offering. These grippy, eight-ounce, aircraft aluminum footpegs are as versatile as the motorcycles for which they were designed, and a special installation pin and spring system makes them a breeze to install. Their oversized, 2.5” x 4.5” platform provides significantly more leverage. Turning while standing with this much leverage truly makes the bike feel like it has power steering. Their machined billet aluminum, U.S.-
built body is stocky and robust, but not overly bulky. Traction cleats grip the boots, yet clear all but the clingiest clay through machined relief ports. Best of all, each footpeg has its own built-in bottle opener! It’s fun to sit in the shop and reach out, almost like offering a toast to the bike, then slip a bottle underneath the footpeg and “squish!” Your reward is ready for that amazing first taste!
