The BMW MOA Foundation will offer a free training experience for young riders ages 14 – 18 at the International Rally in St. Paul. GEARS training will be held on the rally grounds Tuesday and Wednesday prior to the event. The training agenda will be directed by “Coach” Ramey Stroud. Coach is a big supporter of the Foundation, training and young adults. If you haven’t watched Coach deliver a training session, you should stop by the GEARS training compound. He is engaged with the younger generation and delivers information in their terms, a skill that most parents would love to acquire.
GEARS training will be improved this year to keep the activity to a maximum and the downtime between exercises to a minimum. The daytime activities will consist of a split format. One group of riders will be in the classroom while the other group is riding exercises on a closed range. At appropriate intervals, the groups will trade places. The new format will also provide more one-on-one instruction.
Another new feature for 2014 is the use of training motorcycles for all participants. GEARS students will need to bring their helmet, eye protection, gloves, over-the-ankle footwear, long sleeves and pants, but the training bike will be provided for their use. Of course, we will have plenty of food, refreshments and fuel for everyone.
The experience doesn’t end at the classroom door. Young campers will be able to pitch their tents in a reserved space where they can tell stories about the day’s activities or share their latest riding adventure with fellow riders, much like we do around the rally fire. We’ll have a cookout on day one, an awards dinner on day two and maybe a few cool door prizes for the attendees. Parents and guardians are encouraged to camp with the young riders and serve as “camp counselors” for evening activities.
GEARS training this year is limited to riders aged 14–18 and is fully subsidized by the Foundation. There is no cost to the participant for GEARS training, but space is limited and registration requires a $50 deposit to guarantee your spot. If you complete the GEARS training program, your deposit will be refunded by mail after the rally. Your rally fee will be paid by the Foundation as well. You can register online on the Foundation Registration page, or call the MOA office at 636-394-7277 to register by phone.
