For the first time in its history, the 2014 BMW Motorrad International GS Trophy will take place in the northern hemisphere, with 16 teams comprising participants from at least 18 nations set to rendezvous in Canada to contest this friendly competition dedicated to the famous GS spirit.

The special exhibition “A Life for Motorcycles” at the BMW Museum in Munich shows the F800GS that German adventuress Doris Wiedemann drove at temperatures of -50° Celsius / -72° Fahrenheit through Canada and Alaska to the frozen Polar Sea, being the first woman traveling the Dalton Highway on a motorcycle in winter.
Summer solstice at the Sun Tunnels (Utah’s version of Stonehenge) and the trek on the original Transcontinental Railroad bed to the Spiral Jetty in the Great Salt Lake allowed me to partake in many of my interests during one trip: art history, earthworks, railroad history, astronomy, photography, camping and any excuse for motorcycling.
Last year I was given the opportunity to ride a specially prepped Rooney Special Airhead BMW in the AustralAsian Safari Rally, touted as the “the toughest, most demanding off-road race in the Eastern Hemisphere.” It’s seven days and 1,500 miles through western Australia’s grand Outback. It was an opportunity I could not refuse. Plans were made over several months, support was garnered from a multitude of sources and in September I got on a plane with a bag full of gear in tow, bound for the other side of the world.
