Who doesn't like spring? As motorcycle riders, many of us are socked in for the winter and suffer from PMS – Parked Motorcycle Syndrome. That was the case in Idaho this year, and to make matters worse, I have several so-called friends in Texas, California and other warm climates who delighted in tormenting me with their stories of beautiful rides on warm, sunny days. I’ll settle accounts with them later, but the important thing is that now it’s March, and it’s time to plan our summer adventures! But where to go and what to do? Fortunately, the list is big.
First, you need to lay plans to attend our 41st International Rally in Salem, Ore. I’ve ridden all of the Pacific Northwest and know that this part of the U.S. and Canada has some of the best motorcycle roads in North America. The rally site is beautiful, with that “lived in” feel that makes for a perfect family reunion. Just a few miles farther west is the spectacular Oregon coast. If you have never been, you really, really need to ride as much of Highway 101 as possible. From Astoria to the California border, the entire Oregon coast is an amazing riding experience!
Adventure riders have the opportunity to participate in our third annual GS Giant! If you think a clean GS is a dirty shame, then this is the experience for you! Check out the MOA website, sign up and don’t miss the riding adventure you will be talking about years from now.
Everyone has a chance to buy a ticket (or three, or 10) for the Superstakes IV. Last year 13 brand new BMW bikes were awarded, along with many thousands of dollars worth of great riding gear and accessories. In addition to possible prizes, your ticket(s) also help fund the work of the BMW MOA Foundation, which is the only organization of its kind dedicated to advanced rider training and education. Check out http://www.bmwmoafoundation.org to see what you will be supporting through your Superstakes participation.
If you have never ridden internationally, then the BMW MOA International Tour is your chance to ride where you have only read about! We also offer great domestic, hotel-based intimate weekend gatherings with our Weekend Getaway regional events. These incredibly popular activities have limited attendance, so make your reservations quickly.
Wherever you ride, don’t forget that you are part of the greatest BMW motorcycle club in the world. Inevitably you’ll meet another BMW rider who is not an MOA member, so do that person a great favor and turn them on to our 3 Free program! They can sign up on our website for three free issues of the BMW Owners News to see what they have been missing. If every one of you did that for just one other rider, our family would grow tremendously, and each of you would make a friend out of a stranger.
Finally, don’t forget that many of our Chartered Clubs stage truly great regional rallies throughout the season, so check out the Where and When in the BMW Owners News or at http://www.bmwmoa.org.
So, go get that “Grin Factor” bike ready for summer right now, and make 2013 the year when you missed no opportunity to ride well, and often!
