Last year I was given the opportunity to ride a specially prepped Rooney Special Airhead BMW in the AustralAsian Safari Rally, touted as the “the toughest, most demanding off-road race in the Eastern Hemisphere.” It’s seven days and 1,500 miles through western Australia’s grand Outback. It was an opportunity I could not refuse. Plans were made over several months, support was garnered from a multitude of sources and in September I got on a plane with a bag full of gear in tow, bound for the other side of the world.
The next generation flat twin enduro will have a base Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $15,800. It became available for purchase through authorized BMW Motorrad dealers in March.

Munich. The BMW Group is realigning its BMW Motorrad business. In the context of changing motorcycle markets, demographic trends and increasing environmental demands, BMW Motorrad will expand its product offering to exploit future growth potential. The focus of the realignment will be on urban mobility and e-mobility. By restructuring the segment, the BMW Group will concentrate on expanding and utilising the resources of the BMW Motorrad brand. Therefore the BMW Group signed a purchase agreement with Pierer Industrie AG (Austria) for the acquisition of Husqvarna Motorcycles. The acquisition will proceed subject to approval by anti-trust authorities. Both companies have agreed not to disclose the purchase price.
We are sorry to share with MOA members that Frank Diederich passed away from cancer on September 28.
Before there was the BMW MOA, Frank saw a need for communication among the few -- at that time -- BMW riders. He was one of the founders of the Chicago Region BMW Club. Shortly thereafter, he was one of BMW MOA's founders and shepherded the fledgling organization through its rocky beginning. His staunch belief that it be a member-focused and -run organization has stood the test of time. He followed Chuck Smith as editor of the fledgling BMW News, which in those early days was brought home from the printer and collated by Frank and his wife Margaret ("Ducks" or "Ducky") on their dining room table.
