According to various local experts, “Champ” is the elusive, possibly fictional creature dwelling in Lake Champlain. Perhaps Vermont’s version of the Loch Ness Monster – although some hesitate to classify Champ a monster, preferring “creature” instead. There have been numerous sightings over the years, and theories of what Champ is include a giant sturgeon, a mutated fish-snake, or some unknown being. One thing is certain, Champ is shy. Some pictures show a long neck and slender head, with some undetermined body shape protruding above the water. Other pictures are very fuzzy and you can’t tell what you’re looking at. People have reported large ripples accompanied by dark 20-foot shadows beneath the waves.
Whatever Champ is, he/she/it has added much to the local color, both as mascot for teams, a name for groups, attraction for tourists, and is otherwise involved in area communities. Could Champ be the descendant of some long-ago ocean creature that morphed into a freshwater being after the Champlain Sea was cut off from the ocean?
PT Barnham once offered $50,000 for capturing Champ, dead or alive. No one succeeded, and Champ remains a mystery. Since PT Barnham is long gone, the offer must have expired with PT, but watch the water with your camera ready, as you may see Champ.
