2008 Rally:
Evening Entertainment
By Michael Friedle #15249, Evening Entertainment Committee Chair
June 2, 2008

As if just being in Gillette, Wyoming attending the annual International Rally isn't entertaining enough for you, we have also scheduled some fine evening entertainment for Wednesday through Saturday nights under the "Big Top" tent.

Wednesday evening will feature "Bavarian Idle" presenting some of your very favorite music. In fact it WILL BE your very favorite music. Here is your opportunity to program a 20 minute set of your favorite tunes on your iPod or mp3 player to share with all the other attendees. Your selections might resemble the smooth purring idle of a well tuned K bike, the slow loping idle of a vintage /2, or even the rough, disjointed, idle of an airhead in need of a good overhaul. Anything goes from rap to rock, reggae to religion. It's your show! First come first served. If there is enough interest we might even persuade Bavarian Idle to make some extra appearances on Thursday and Saturday nights as an opening act.

Thursday night will feature country music from Hoss Howard. Hoss has always loved country music. He spent his childhood on a dairy farm in Arkansas surrounded by lots of family. They would gather at the farm every weekend to sing and play music together. Music continued to be a big part of his life but it was not until several years later, after serving in the first Gulf War, that Hoss realized how passionate he really was about music. Music was not just something he enjoyed listening to, or casually playing, but a force deep within him that needed to be expressed. Hoss began to explore song writing and soon discovered that he had a natural ability.

Recently, before his mother lost her long battle with cancer, she made Hoss' wife, Tinker, promise that she would continue to encourage Hoss to pursue music as a career. Tinker said that she would, but only if Hoss' mother helped from the "other side". Tinker fulfilled her promise by, among other things, sending some of Hoss' songs to a producer in Nashville. The producer loved it and soon Hoss was on his way to Nashville. Hard work and dedication resulted in the completion of Hoss' first CD "Country on Octane". Hoss would not be where he is without the love and support of Tinker, and help from the "other side".

Friday evening will be a very special night. Panama Red is back in town! When I heard that the Rally was to be in Gillette Wyoming the first music that came into my head was that of the New Riders of the Purple Sage. In case you have been in a musical coma for the last 35 years and don't know of the NRPS, here's a very brief history.

In the summer of 1969, John Dawson was looking to showcase his songs while Jerry Garcia was looking to practice his brand new pedal steel guitar. The two played in coffeehouses and small clubs initially, and the music they made became the nucleus for a band-the New Riders of the Purple Sage. That same year, David Nelson, expert in both country and rock guitar, joined the group on electric lead guitar. One of the many gigs with the Dead included the Trans-Canadian Festival Express with Janis Joplin, The Band, and other American and Canadian artists like Ian and Sylvia, who had with them a brilliant, innovative pedal steel player named Buddy Cage. When Garcia's busy schedule made it increasingly difficult for him to play with the New Riders, the talented Cage was the perfect choice to fill the pedal steel spot.

The years of living on the road took their toll and the band took some time off. They reunited for a tour in 2006 and have been going strong since then with renewed vitality, spirit and tremendous energy playing all their old favorites and new material as well.

Saturday night features the return of a group the Rally Chairs enjoyed so much at the Spokane Rally, they insisted we invite them back to Gillette this year...StageCoach West. They know how to have a good time! So get out there and dance!

Welcome to Gillette, we're glad you all could make it!
