I tackled a full service cycle of my 1976 R 90/6 using only the tool kit I assembled, which I had to do because the stock tool kit was not included with the bike when I bought it. The TL;DR version is I was mostly successful, but I needed a few things I didn’t already have.

This series is meant for riders new to Airheads who may not have a lot of mechanical knowledge. In many cases, you’ll be learning right along with our host! The process shown in this video applies to BMWs from the 1970s and possibly the early 1980s and beyond. CHECK YOUR SHOP MANUAL FOR DETAILS associated with your particular motorcycle. 

Tasks accomplished with tools used:

• 3/8″ driver for all sockets
• SBVTools Digital Torque Wrench (which I call the “torque egg”); learn more at https://beemershop.com
• Engine oil & filter change: H8 socket, 17 mm socket, H5 long/wobble socket, 6″ extension, needlenose pliers
• Transmission oil change: H8 socket, 19 mm socket, 6″ extension
• Final drive oil change: H8 socket, 19 mm socket, 3″ extension
• Swing arm oil change: 17 mm socket, 6″ extension
• Valve clearance check: 10 mm wrench, 2 x 12 mm wrenches, 14 mm socket, flat screwdriver, exhaust nut wrench, feeler gauges
• Brake flush/bleed: 10 mm wrench (to remove fuel tank), 7/16″ wrench (for bleeder valve)
• Removing/replacing wheels: H6 socket (front pinch bolts), 14 mm socket & 14 mm wrench (rear pinch bolt), 22 mm socket (front axle nut), 22 mm crow’s-foot (rear axle nut)
