Grand Coddiwomple

The BMW MOA’s Grand Coddiwomple is a free riding activity open only to MOA members. What is a Coddiwomple, you ask? Well, it means “to travel purposefully toward a vague destination.” So, think of this as a large-scale scavenger hunt created just for BMW MOA members!

The Grand Coddiwomple is about all the places you will go and the fun things you will do that you would not have done otherwise. You get to choose your own Challenges and routes, ridden on your own schedule! Everything is spelled out on the Rules and Challenges pages. (Links available at a later date.)

Completing this activity should be relatively easy. Scoring a very high points total will be more challenging. Although there are some competitive elements, it’s not about prizes or competition. It’s about all the things you’ll see and the places you’ll go! It’s designed to give everyone the opportunity to participate, even if your riding time is limited. The entire point of the Grand Coddiwomple event is to have fun riding your motorcycle!

This event typically runs from April through October, with registration opening on February 2. Participation is limited to the first 1,000 MOA members to express interest. We thank Team Strange for their support and for allowing us to base our rules on their Team Strange Airheads Uniform Rules and Grand Tour Rules.

You are encouraged to volunteer as a photo judge. It’s fun and easy, and you can still participate in the Coddiwomple! Just email CODDIWOMPLE@BMWMOA.ORG for more information. Have fun planning your ride and riding your plan! It’s the Grand Coddiwomple!

How Does the Coddiwomple Work?

In simple terms, you’ll ride your bike to various physical locations described in the Challenges document and provide proof with photos of your bike and your Grand Coddiwomple flag. There are exceptions in the name of practicality or site-specific limitations, so read the Rules carefully.

Each challenge is worth a stated number of points. You need 300 points to complete the Grand Coddiwomple. When you complete, you will earn bragging rights and receive a paper completion certificate suitable for framing and a commemorative pin. However, it is possible to go well beyond 300 points, and the person with the highest total points will be named the winner and will receive a recognition award. There will also be prize pools for those with higher points totals. See the Rules for details.

Questions

Reading comprehension matters. We believe that carefully reading the Rules and Challenges documents will answer most questions. However, there will be more detailed information in the event FAQ. Information there will be updated throughout the duration of the event as needed, so check often. If you still do not find an answer to your question(s) send an email to coddiwomple@bmwmoa.org. Please understand that the people responding are all volunteers and a reply may take several days.

  4. Challenges may have additional specific requirements in the challenge description that must be honored to receive points.
  5. Participants may submit any questions about these Rules or Challenges by email to coddiwomple@bmwmoa.org. All changes to, or interpretations of, these Rules and/or Challenges will be recorded in The Grand Coddiwomple FAQ on the Grand Coddiwomple website at bmwmoa.org/coddiwomple.

Event Dates & Registration

  1. The Grand Coddiwomple is an annual event running from April Fool’s Day through Halloween (April 1 – October 31, 2025, inclusive).
  2. Registration opens Groundhog Day (February 2, 2025) at bmwmoa.org/coddiwomple. Participants will receive an event packet via USPS with their numbered Grand Coddiwomple flag and a sticker.
  3. Registrations will be accepted after the event starts, but late registration does not extend the end date or submission deadlines.
  4. All photographic proof of visit must be submitted by October 31, 2025 (Halloween) at 23:59 UTC -12, the Howland and Baker Islands Time Zone. This Time Zone is uninhabited and the last place on Earth where it will officially still be any given date. It is four hours behind the US Pacific Time Zone and gives the whole world a few hours of slack for turning in Grand Coddiwomple points.

In such cases, you would not be able to claim the photo without your flag.
  4. If you find a lost flag, leave it where you find it. It’s ok to weigh it down if it’s in danger of blowing away or to post a message on the BMW MOA Forum or Facebook page that you found a flag and its location but leave it for the owner to retrieve.
