Green Flag for Daytona 50th Anniversary Celebration

In March 1976, BMW Motorrad made a statement that resonated worldwide. A team of R 90 S Beemers built by the legendary Udo Gietl headed to Daytona International Speedway for the first AMA Superbike race. BMWs ridden by Gary Fisher, Reg Pridmore, and last-minute addition Steve McLaughlin took first and second on the podium that day in a photo finish! Reg went on to win the series championship for the year. The legend of the Daytona Orange R 90 S machines was sealed forever!

Now, after months of dedicated work with the team at Daytona International Speedway, Steve McLaughlin and Rob McIsaac recently wrapped up negotiations, setting the stage for a celebration of the BMW Superbike wins at Daytona and the 1976 championship overall!

The dates are March 5-7, 2026, and scheduled around the Daytona 200. Organizers are currently working with BMW MOA, BMW RA, Airheads, Vintage BMW Owners, and AHRMA to finalize the details. With luck, we’ll be able to bring the three R 90 S entrants from that historic season together again at Daytona.

We have space for camping, a dinner with racers from that era, tech sessions, and a chance to ride on the historic track before the race. We are also looking forward to gathering as many R 90 S, R 100 S, and R 100 CS Beemers as possible for an epic group photo with the racers. Registration is open!

Steve McLaughlin and Robert McIsaac were recently featured on the Airhead247 podcast discussing details of the upcoming event. Take a listen, or if you’d like to be added to an email list for updates or have any questions, please send a note to Rob McIsaac at triangle.bmwcca.activities@gmail.com.
