2025 CODDIWOMPLE CHALLENGES & RULES
2025 GRAND CODDIWOMPLE FAQ
You can download a PDF copy of this FAQ.
- Do I have to ride a BMW Motorcycle to participate in this contest?
Not at all. You can ride any motorcycle brand or model of your choice, or any combination of motorcycles. This is about riding and having fun! - Do I have to ride the same motorcycle through the event?
Not at all. You can ride any combination of motorcycles you like. However, we can’t be responsible if you get caught stealing one. - Where’s my flag? How long till I get it? Why is it taking so long?
Flags are sent out when the BMW MOA office can send them out. Also, the USPS has been averaging approximately 14 – 21 days to deliver the envelopes once they get them. Be patient, as the volunteer staff of The Grand Coddiwomple, do not really know when your flag was mailed or when it will arrive. - If I don’t have my flag when the contest starts on April 1st, can I still take photos?
Yes, just follow rule 5a about substituting your face for your flag in your photos. Since some objects are a little difficult to get close to with a motorcycle, you’ll need to do those later after your flag arrives. - How do I submit my photos to claim points in a challenge?
All Challenge photos must be submitted as specified by the Grand Coddiwomple Photo Submission Instructions and in accordance with Grand Coddiwomple Rules located on the Grand Coddiwomple web page. If you have any issues with submitting your photo entries via the Coddiwomple Riders Portal, please contact the Coddiwomple Inbox at coddiwomple@bmwmoa.org. - What if I have problems registering with the Coddiwomple Riders website?
If you have problems registering with the Coddiwomple Riders website, send an email to the Coddiwomple Inbox at coddiwomple@bmwmoa.org - Are submissions accepted via email?
No. Photos must be submitted through the Grand Coddiwomple Rider’s Portal. We don’t have the ability to score submissions via email. - Can I submit more than one link if the links are for the same challenge?
No, with one exception. Supplemental links can be put in the submission comments field. - I just submitted a photo and got the email saying it has been received. Why does the dashboard not show that the submission is ready to be scored?
There is a 15-minute lag between the 2 parts of the scoring system. Even though the submission status is updated a few seconds after it is recorded, data sync only happens every 15 minutes and not in time for the dashboard to see after your submission. It will change eventually. - Can a photo be used by more than one contestant?
Yes, provided it meets the qualifications for each participant (bike, thing, flag) and is used only once by each individual participant.EXAMPLE: You and your significant other or riding buddy – or buddies – are all participating in the Grand Coddiwomple and photograph your bikes and flags with a Challenge “thing.” Each participant may use that photo once for themselves.
- How can I make sure my photos meet the requirements?
There are two ways to get a photo accepted. First, it must show the required elements, so read each Challenge definition of the photo requirements and make sure all elements are clearly visible – especially any signs and your flag number.Just as important: These elements must be clearly visible. Our poor judges are going blind looking at photos already, so give ‘em a break by checking the photo on your camera or phone before you ride away. Many cell phone cameras default to a wide-angle view which reduces the size of things in the photo making them harder to see clearly. Get in as close as possible while still including your motorcycle, flag, and the Challenge “thing.” You can do this by zooming in with your camera/phone or physically moving closer. As insurance, take several shots so you can use the best for your submission.
- Will I receive a notice when my photos are scored?
Yes. You will receive an email with the submission id and the status of your submission through the entire scoring process. - Will there be Challenges in my area?
There should be! We try to make the types of Challenges widespread enough in geographic location, and varied in type, to give riders in most areas a good shot at participating. - Can I participate even if I volunteer?
Absolutely! If you are participating in the Coddiwomple, you may volunteer as a photo judge, you just can’t judge your own submissions. Email coddiwomple@bmwmoa.org to volunteer—operators are standing by! - Can I use a mirror to show my bike or my face in a photo?
Yes, if there is no other way to get your bike and/or face, flag, and “thing” in a photo, we will accept the use of a mirror to show the missing element(s). The photo must still contain all the elements required to claim the challenge, even if one or more of those elements is presented in the mirror. It is preferred to have all the required elements presented directly in the photo. - How much must my motorcycle be visible in the photo?
Enough to show that it is a motorcycle. For example, parts of the handlebars, body work, windshield, wheels, exhaust, etc., are distinctive enough to show that it’s a motorcycle in your photo. - Does the District of Columbia count as a state?
Yes. - What counts as a “state” or “province”? (My country does not have states or provinces.)
While States and Provinces do refer to the US and Canada respectively, other countries also have states or provinces, or other similar local political jurisdictions: territories, districts, divisions, departments, and so on. So, we are using “state” or “province” literally where they apply, but we will accept whatever such local jurisdictions are present in the country or countries where you capture Challenges. Please include that information with any submission for a Challenge with a “State or Province” requirement so we can follow along. Thanks! - Can I use the same photo if it meets the requirements for two different challenges?
Yes. You might run into a situation where the object photographed qualifies for two different challenges. A real twofer! This was the case in 2022 with the Golden Driller, one of the Sites in the Celebrate the Mother Road Challenge that also qualified for the Titans Among Us challenge. - What if I have a photo that includes two items for the same challenge? Two years ago, I had a photo at the intersection of NC 18 and 21 in Sparta for the Count to Fifty Challenge. Why do I need to submit two different photos?
Because we want you to get full credit for both items in your twofer photo while making scoring bearable for our judges. To get your twofer you can either snap a second photo to submit, or make a copy of your photo, give it a unique link and submit that. But the photos must have unique links, or one will be rejected as a duplicate during the final review of submissions at the end of the Coddiwomple. - For the Hee Haw challenge, are selfies accepted?
No. The Demented Instigator wants only the four-legged version. - For the Starbucks and Friends challenge, are Starbucks, Dunkin and Tim Hortons the only shops being accepted?
No, as stated in the last sentence of the challenge “Submissions must be a coffee-focused business that serves coffee, not a business that happens to sell coffee.” - For the Hee Haw challenge, will you accept horses?
No. The challenge states “Submit your photographic proof of visit to Sites containing statues or murals of Donkeys/Burros.” Can our judges tell the difference between a donkey and a mule? Time will tell. - For the Starbucks and Friends challenge, Will you accept coffee shops that are inside gas stations or have ice cream shops sharing the business?
No. The challenge specifically says stand-alone locations only. - For the I’ve been Everywhere challenge, if a state name is listed as one of the places, do we need to visit the state or can it be a city that is named that state, such as Washington, Michigan?
You can use it either way. You can use as a Place name such as Washington DC, or you can claim the border of Washington state and submit the border sign at the Washington/Oregon border or the Washington/Idaho border. - For Site #18 of the Music Cities Challenge, the address that is listed is not a graveyard, will you accept this for site #18?
Yes, but if you google “Morris Hill Cemetery,” you will find the actual cemetery at 317 N Latah St in Boise Idaho. This is why you should be doing research. - For the Starbucks and Friends Challenge, will a coffee-focused business’ building that only has the company’s icon be accepted?
No, the challenge specifically says that the name of the coffee-focused business must be included in the submission. - For the Loose Cannon challenge, are submissions that contain mortars considered cannons and will be scored?
No. We are specifically looking for large caliber artillery cannons, not small bomb-launching mortars. The challenge specifies this.

Event Dates & Registration

- Registration opens Groundhog Day (February 2, 2025) at bmwmoa.org/coddiwomple. Participants will receive an event packet via USPS with their numbered Grand Coddiwomple flag and a sticker.
- Registrations will be accepted after the event starts, but late registration does not extend the end date or submission deadlines.
- All photographic proof of visit must be submitted by October 31, 2025 (Halloween) at 23:59 UTC -12, the Howland and Baker Islands Time Zone. This Time Zone is uninhabited and the last place on Earth where it will officially still be any given date. It is four hours behind the US Pacific Time Zone and gives the whole world a few hours of slack for turning in Grand Coddiwomple points.
Definitions
- “Place” means a city, town, or village recognized as such by a State, Provincial, or other government authority.

Photographic Proof of Visit Requirements
- Photographs submitted to claim challenge points must clearly include your flag, your motorcycle, and all challenge requirements. Your face can replace your flag or your motorcycle but not both.
- Visits to a Place, Site, Park, and Highway have specific documentation requirements as follows:
- “Place” – Your photograph must include one of the following that clearly shows the Place name: Post Office building, Fire Department building, Police or Sheriff’s Department building, Town Hall or City Hall building, City/town/village welcome sign, City/town/village limit sign.
- “Site” – Your photograph must clearly include a historic marker or point-of-interest marker that displays the elements required by the challenge.

- Any sign, plaque or other identifier must be a government marker or from a recognized historical organization, not from a private party or business, unless otherwise stated in the challenge description.
- The plural of any defined term (Place, Site, Park, Highway) is the same as the singular term.
- State includes a Province or other similar governmental subdivision of a country.
- A Place, Park, Site, or Highway may only be used once for a given challenge unless otherwise stated in the challenge description.
- In circumstances where you cannot physically get your motorcycle into the photo, your face must be in the photo in place of your motorcycle. If you have lost your flag, your motorcycle must be in the photo. Your face can replace your flag or your motorcycle, but not both.
- The primary photo must clearly contain all the required elements of a challenge. Supplemental photos may be submitted to help clarify the primary photo submission. The second clarifying photo may be submitted only to provide readability or other details of an element in the primary photo.
- A given photo can only be used once per participant per Grand Coddiwomple. For example, if you and another rider are in the same photo, each of you may use the same photo once.
- Any sign or other identifier must be free of mileage and distance indicators or arrows.
- Holiday decorations are not accepted for any challenge unless stated in the challenge description.
- Mobile objects (Cars, Trucks, Trains etc.) are not accepted for any challenge unless stated in the challenge description.
Grand Coddiwomple Flag
- Each participant will receive an official BMW MOA Grand Coddiwomple flag (hereafter referred to as “flag” or “the flag”) bearing the Grand Coddiwomple logo and a unique participant number. Your flag must be clearly visible in all pictures submitted as photographic proof of visit.
- If you lose your flag, please contact the Grand Coddiwomple Committee by emailing a description of your unfortunate and woeful predicament to coddiwomple@bmwmoa.org.
- If you lose or forget your flag, your face must replace your flag in all photos. Your face may replace your flag, or your bike, but not both. For example, Rule 5g permits replacement of the motorcycle with your face in situations where it isn’t safe to include the motorcycle in the photo. In such cases, you would not be able to claim the photo without your flag.
- If you find a lost flag, leave it where you find it. It’s ok to weigh it down if it’s in danger of blowing away or to post a message on the BMW MOA Forum or Facebook page that you found a flag and its location but leave it for the owner to retrieve.
Submitting Photos
- All Challenge photos must be taken during the Grand Coddiwomple event period.
- All Challenge photos must be submitted using the Grand Coddiwomple Riders’ Portal. Instructions on how to register and submit photos are in the instructions which are posted on the Grand Coddiwomple website at bmwmoa.org/coddiphotos
- All Challenge photos must be individual links, must be browser viewable, and must be available till November 30th for audit purposes. If a Challenge photo link was previously scored and when audited that Challenge photo link is no longer available, the submission will be changed to rejected resulting in the loss of previously scored points.
