Met Scott in Victoria, Virginia at La Victoria Mexican Restaurant. Had a big burrito filled with refried beans, rice and grilled shrimp. Mostly beans & rice. Tasty. Got there 40 minutes early – I was bored at home and ride prep took less time than anticipated. The bike didn’t need oil (put in 8 oz yesterday) and the tires were OK at 36 & 38.

I took US 360 through Richmond and then south, cutting across a local road to VA 49 and into Victoria. Through the city was OK – rough roads but light traffic even for a Saturday, but especially on a holiday weekend. The Southside suburbs REALLY sucked, though. Tons of traffic, lots of stoplights and nobody really paying attention. I took the same route back, but bailed on US 360 near VA 288, skipping the close-in parts of Chesterfield. It was much nicer, but I doubt I’ll be able to remember the route again because it was kind of convoluted and I just let the Beeline guide me. Weather was perfect – all 70s and 80s all day. Used my mid-season BMW gloves in the morning (the racer ones) and the new Klim Inductions after lunch.

(2026 Note: After this day’s ride, I rarely ride this stretch of US 360, and certainly not if I can help it. Instead I just take VA 288, which is more like a freeway than a local road; it’s part of what makes up the “loop” or “beltway” around Richmond. It’s 288 on the west side of the city and I 295 on the east side.)

Since I had time to kill – Scott was precisely on time, weird for a musician – I wandered around a small antique mall place on main street. I found a cool NRA-branded pistol case that will be really useful once I tear the foam out and clean up the inside. I also got a neat “for motor fuel only – contains lead” sign, a Winnie-the-Pooh hand puppet for my wife and two interesting rings for our kid.

Scott’s tool kit was more like the one for my R 60/2 than the R 90/6 – no sockets at all! Otherwise it has the same heavy, poor quality tools everybody else got with these bikes when they bought them.
