New world record! Just kidding. Maybe. 400-mile weekend though, plus 70 or so miles on Friday for lunch with PJ. Might be the farthest I’ve ridden this bike in one weekend so far. I left this morning at 0900, got home a little after 1600. Tired and a bit sore but happy with the ride and the bike. I wanted lunch at the Barbeque Exchange in Gordonsville & even called Kermit to see if he was interested in joining me (he’s out of town). BBQX is only about 50 miles away though. I made an all day loop with Gordonsville in the middle – Columbia, Dillwyn, Gordonsville, Unionville, Locust Grove, Thornburg, Bowling Green and then back home.

I got stuck two different times on US 15 behind trucks. One was a regular giant Ford F 150 luxo-truck, four doors and nothing in the bed. That was south of Zion’s Crossroads. The other was a big-ass Walmart semi rig north of Zion’s Crossroads, still on US 15, but south of Gordonsville. Turns out there’s a Walmart distribution center there, so now it makes sense why I always see those big-ass semis on two-lane US 15 between Gordonsville and I 64.

It’s sometimes hard to remember lessons about compassion, kindness and patience when you’re going 5-10 mph under the speed limit because of the slow-poke pudknocker in front of you and a dearth of passing zones. I survived. I’m not sure I learned anything about myself, though.

Lunch never stood a chance!

The weather was beautiful again. I needed a flannel shirt under my mesh jacket in the morning. I should have used my race gloves all day, but switching to summer gloves in the afternoon wasn’t miserable.

I almost bailed on the leg between Thornburg and Bowling Green. I got on US 1 for about three miles at a time I was tired and kind of just ready to be home. I thought “I could just go home from here, zip right down US 1 at 60 and be done.” But I ride that stretch of road all the time, so been there/done that, over & over & over. So I turned where the Beeline told me to and am SO GLAD I did! Whatever road that is between Thornburg and Bowling Green, it is just fantastic. (I looked it up – it’s CR 605, 15 miles long). Tight and curvy, speed limit from 35 to 45 mph, it was just a ton of fun! Glad I gave up on giving up.
